Photos of the 2005 Fun Fly

The Jefco AeroMod'lers and Colorado Rotor-Heads 5th annual Heli Fun Fly on May 21st was a great success, with 47 pilots bringing nearly 105 helicopters! I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts in making this year's event the best yet. We had a great turn out, with a fantastic array of models. Our thanks and appreciation go to Tom Powers for bringing the Schweizer (full-sized helicopter) to display! Please also remember to support our event sponsors who graciously donated items for our raffle and event prizes. I am working hard to get all of the pictures taken by club members posted on the slideshow above soon - I have more than 150 new pictures to process. If anyone took pictures at the event and would like to have them added to the slideshow, please email them to the Webmaster.

2005 Events included:
Drag Racing This event will start in two starting boxes on the north/south runway. The helicopters will fly parallel to the east/west runway, to the finish line at the far west end of the E/W runway. Through single-elimination, the fastest helicopter wins. Event Results: First Place - Kent Stewart, Big Block Raptor 91 Second Place - Dr. Bob Motazedi, Fury 91 Third Place - Eric Balay, Raptor 90
Scale Contest This event will be scored in two parts - a static display, and a scale flight. Static display scoring will be based upon visual authenticity, detailing, and overall effect. Documentation is acceptable to show similarity to full-sized helicopters. The scale flight scoring will be based upon realism. There are no prescribed flight maneuvers, other than the helicopter must take flight. Much of the scoring will be subjective, and the judge's decisions are final. The pilot who scores the most combined points wins. Event Results: First Place - Eric Balay, Raptor 46/Hind-D Gunship Second Place - Dave Gardner, Raptor 60/Hughes MD-500 Third Place - John Lovett, SeaKing
Beginner Event - Timed Hover This event requires the pilot to keep the helicopter airborne for 60 seconds. The pilot may not use a timer, watch, or other time keeping device. The pilot who scores a time closest to exactly 60 seconds wins. Event Results: First Place - Bob Douglas, with a time differential of 1.37 seconds Second Place - Scott Arehart, with a time differential of 2.78 seconds Third Place - Gary Saltsman, with a time differential of 5.13 seconds
Intermediate Event - Lemans Heli Rodeo This is a timed event. The pilot will place his helicopter (with fuel tank empty), transmitter, fuel and any necessary starting equipment in the Heli Start Box. The pilot must stand in the Pilot Start Box, located approximately 50 feet from the Heli Start Box. At the start signal, the timer will begin. The pilot will run to the Heli Start Box, fuel and start the helicopter, take-off, fly past the pylon in the field, land the helicopter back in the Heli Start Box, shutdown the engine, and run back to the Pilot Start Box, at which point the timer will stop. The pilot who scores the lowest elapsed time wins. Electric powered helicopters will incur a 30 second penalty. Event Results: First Place - Kevin Kelsey, with a time of 1 minute 10.47 seconds Second Place - Steve Sampier, with a time of 1 minute 10.53 seconds Third Place - Bruno Mary, with a time of 1 minute 18.34 seconds
Expert Event - Speedy Airshow This is a timed event, which requires the pilot to perform two loops (not flips), two rolls, a 540 degree stall turn, and an autorotation to the landing site. The maneuvers must be flown in this order. The landing site will be a two foot diameter circle. The mainshaft of the helicopter will determine the landing position. Landings outside of the two foot circle will incur a 10 second penalty. The timer will start when the heli leaves the starting pad, and will stop when the helicopter comes to a stop following the landing. The pilot who scores the lowest elapsed time wins. Event Results: First Place - Eric Balay, with a time of 27.38 seconds Second Place - Larry Laughlin, with a time of 37.55 seconds Third Place - Ryan Korzyniowski, with a time of 39.75 seconds
