The Jefco AeroMod'lers and Colorado Rotor-Heads 4th annual Heli Fun Fly on May 15th was a great success, with 35 pilots bringing nearly 85 helicopters! I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts in making this year's event the best yet. We had a great turn out, with a fantastic array of models. Our thanks and appreciation go to Bill Murphy for bringing his newly painted Jet Ranger (full-sized) to display! Please also remember to support our event sponsors who graciously donated items for our raffle and event prizes. If anyone took pictures at the event and would like to have them added to the slideshow, please feel free to email them to the Webmaster.

The 4th Annual Jefco Helicopter Day was held May 15, 2004, at Chatfield Reservoir Colorado State Park. The Jefco AeroMod'lers have graciously allowed the Colorado Rotor-Heads to use their world-class RC Flying Field for this special event. Registration is $15.00, and pilot check-in is at 8:30 AM (the field will be open at 7:00 AM for flying). There were plenty of goodies for the raffle, and lunch was provided for all participants. Each participant received a commemorative event t-shirt. There was open flying throughout the day, plus fun fly style events until 4:00 PM. The 2003 event was very popular with about 35 pilots, 100 spectators and over 75 helicopters in attendance. Helicopter pilots of any skill level and spectators were welcome to attend. 2004 AMA membership is required for all pilots.

2004 Jefco Heli Fun Fly Events included:

bulletDrag Racing This event will start in two starting boxes on the north/south runway. The helicopters will fly parallel to the east/west runway, to the finish line at the far west end of the E/W runway. Through double-elimination, the fastest helicopter wins.
Event Results:
First Place - Dr. Bob Motazedi, Fury 91
Second Place - Jerry Hawker, Freya 80
Third Place - Eric Balay, Raptor 50
bulletScale Contest This event will be scored in two parts - a static display, and a scale flight. Static display scoring will be based upon visual authenticity, detailing, and overall effect. Documentation is acceptable to show similarity to full-sized helicopters. The scale flight scoring will be based upon realism. There are no prescribed flight maneuvers, other than the helicopter must take flight. Much of the scoring will be subjective, and the judge's decisions are final. The pilot who scores the most combined points wins.
Event Results:
First Place - Dan St. John, Vario Bell-47G
Second Place - Dave Gardner, Raptor 50/Twinstar
Third Place - Dave Gardner, Raptor 50/Schweizer 300
bulletBeginner Event - Timed Hover This event requires the pilot to keep the helicopter airborne for 60 seconds. The pilot may not use a timer, watch, or other time keeping device. The pilot who scores a time closest to exactly 60 seconds wins.
Event Results:
First Place - Dave Gardner, with a time differential of 3.91 seconds
Second Place - Darrick Tinson, with a time differential of 5.28 seconds
Third Place - RJ Simmons, with a time differential of 6.69 seconds
bulletIntermediate Event - Lemans Heli Rodeo This is a timed event. The pilot will place his helicopter (with fuel tank empty), transmitter, fuel and any necessary starting equipment in the Heli Start Box. The pilot must stand in the Pilot Start Box, located approximately 100 feet from the Heli Start Box. At the start signal, the timer will begin. The pilot will run to the Heli Start Box, fuel and start the helicopter, take-off, fly past the pylon in the field (150 feet away), land the helicopter back in the Heli Start Box, shutdown the engine, and run back to the Pilot Start Box, at which point the timer will stop. The pilot who scores the lowest elapsed time wins. Electric powered helicopters will incur a 30 second penalty.
Event Results:
First Place - Bob Berg, with a time of 1 minute 24.6 seconds
Second Place - Dave Gardner, with a time of 1 minute 27.0 seconds
Third Place - Steve Bernard, with a time of 1 minute 38.5 seconds
bulletExpert Event - Speedy Airshow This is a timed event, which requires the pilot to perform two loops (not flips), two rolls, a 540 degree stall turn, and an autorotation to the landing site. The maneuvers must be flown in this order. The landing site will be a two foot diameter circle. The mainshaft of the helicopter will determine the landing position. Landings outside of the two foot circle will incur a 10 second penalty. The timer will start when the heli leaves the starting pad, and will stop when the helicopter comes to a stop following the landing. The pilot who scores the lowest elapsed time wins.
Event Results:
First Place - Eric Balay, with a time of 31.3 seconds
Second Place - Ryan Korzyniowski, with a time of 52.5 seconds
Third Place - Dr. Bob Motazedi, with a time of 59.2 seconds
